Jeb Bush doesn’t understand why anyone is upset about the NSA

Presidential hopeful Jeb Bush has recently come out in support of the NSA’s intrusive and unconstitutional surveillance program. According to the National Journal, Bush states:

[T]he NSA metadata program… contributes to awareness of potential terrorist cells and interdiction efforts on a global scale. For the life of me, I don’t understand [how] the debate has gotten off track, where we’re not understanding and protecting — we do protect our civil liberties, but this is a hugely important program to use these technologies to keep us safe.

Like so many politicians today, Jeb Bush neglects the words uttered by Benjamin Franklin nearly three hundred years ago:

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Jeb Bush would also do well to take a refresher course on the 4th amendment’s protection against warrantless searches and seizures.  I, for one, choose liberty and am often reminded of the prophetic words of this country’s 34th President, Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower:

If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking… is freedom.
